Need For Speed : High Stakes is the 4th installment in the Need
For Speed Series. It was originally released for PC in 1999, and was one of the
first online arcade racing games available. When the online service (EAOR)
closed in 2004, some dedicated members of the EAOR community set to work on
keeping this game online.
Today, HS is played online through IPLounge, a lobby and pit tracker for both
NFS:HS and NFS:PU. IPLounge provides users a place to chat, see available pits
and join them. While you are racing, IPLounge automatically sends your
statistics to http://hsscoring.com , a highly
detailed scoring system created by one of the community members.
Due to modern operating systems being used to play the game, many patches are
often needed to make HS run. To help streamline this process and provide an
IPLounge install at the same time, the Stock Pack (SP) was created. With the
help of the SP, HS runs on XP, and usually runs on Vista and Windows 7.
Due to the large amount of mod cars and tracks available for HS, the Expansion
Pack (EP) was created. The EP contains extra cars and tracks that are usable
online in IPLounge and are valid for scoring on HOSS. It also contains a Mixer
that manages these mods; IPLounge and the Mixer work together to automatically
to set the right car list and track list you join an online pit.
